![]() In short, exactly what he claims to reject.Ĭan you give me some examples? Because I know Lee's work pretty damn well and this seems, to me, way off the mark. I see generalization, black/white thinking, exaggeration, and labeling of the 'other'. I see very little of either in Lee's myriad forays into the subject. You say this about Lee's handling of race relations and racial tension:īut the only way to have real discussions requires maturity and honesty. I don't really expect you to read all of this, let alone reply to it. I ended up missing this reply somehow and I'm sure you're long past caring about this, but I'll respond as thoroughly as I can anyway. It's a clear double-standard that was only suited to the era of Jim Crow. They ignore racism from some sources (minorities) while criticizing the majority for the exact missteps as the minority. I don't privilege any race as inherently better or worse.Īlso, regarding "closing our eyes to this sort of racism" (note: calling it 'reverse-racism' implies only whites are capable of 'true' racism), I'm referring to people who do what I've described. You are disallowing criticism by saying, in effect, "You're only saying that because you hate black people." No. We are, however, pointing out that valid opinions about the way he handles race are side-lined and painted as racist delusions. No one is claiming to be oppressed by Spike Lee. What? Every time Lee is mentioned, the discussion turns to white middle class tales of woe under his oppressive boot heel. In short, exactly what he claims to reject. ![]() But the only way to have real discussions requires maturity and honesty. I don't try to ignore the problems that still exist in several areas of society. ![]() This is partly why I think the injection of racism is so unnecessary.Īlso, I can "stomach" racial tension and discussions of race issues just fine. I actually liked 25th Hour, and I like 99% of Inside Man, and have enjoyed some of Lee's other works. There's also several more documentaries that I haven't seen but I've heard are quite good, and I know some people are ardent defenders of Clockers, Inside Man, Crooklyn, and others which I didn't care for as much. On top of these, he has a pretty deep bench of good or great films- School Daze, Mo Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Get On the Bus, Four Little Girls, He Got Game, Summer of Sam (I liked it a lot, at least), 25th Hour, When The Levees Broke. Bamboozled is also a minor masterpiece which is safely one of the best satires of the past 20 years, in spite of it's poor reception. I'll admit that Tarantino definitely maintains a higher average of quality than Lee, but Lee is a pretty outstanding director.ĭo The Right Thing and Malcolm X are both as good as anything Tarantino has ever done. Now, I'm not specifically going to criticize you personally of this, but I will say: Most people I've talked to who take this stance haven't seen any more than 2-3 of Spike Lee's films at most.
